QESHM -- Governor of the Qeshm said on Saturday that a fight against the illicit drug trafficking will be successful only if the people get actively involved in the anti-narcotic campaign. Speaking in the Qeshm Anti-Drug Council session, Behrouz Akrami said, "The local police forces managed to confiscate some amount of different kinds of drugs from the drug dealers and peddlers in Qeshm."

Giving further comments on the statistics related to the drug seizure in Qeshm, Hormozgan Province, he added that the police personnel seized about one ton of hashish last week.

He said, "Some kind of resentment toward the illicit drug abuse should be created in the people and in particular among the youth as a way to curb the drug consumption, the society has to be unsafe for drug offenders and in particular for drug dealers, adding that police has set up anti-drug units to identity the drug-infested areas to cleanse the said areas from drugs. "Stricter punishment for the drug traffickers would play a deterrent role on the drug offenses, he noted and stressed the need for further resources and programs to fully uproot drug dealing."

Akrami praised the police personnel for the strenuous efforts they made in the fight against the illicit drug trafficking and abuse and paid homage to more than 3,200 martyrs of the Iranian anti-drug units who lost their lives to protect the society against the evil drug phenomenon.

He further urged organizations and ministries to get actively engaged in the efforts to curb illicit narcotics.

He commented on the two main aspects of the drug problem -- drug demand and drug supply -- and stressed the necessity for earmarking sufficient resources to reduce demand for drugs, said IRNA.
