TEHRAN -- Police in the southeastern Kerman Province have seized 175 kilos of narcotics and arrested four drug traffickers in recent days, local police told IRNA in Kerman on Tuesday.

The haul was made during two series of operations, in which police engaged bandits on Kerman mountains.

Meanwhile, police in the northeastern Semnan Province confiscated some 27 kilos of drugs, hidden in three cars, and arrested several people in connection with the catches.

Iran has launched a fierce campaign against drug trafficking, which have left thousands of its police officers killed or injured.

The country accounts for 80 percent of the opium and 90 percent of the morphine intercepted in the world, according to the International Narcotics Control Board.

The campaign, according to officials, costs the country $800 million per year.
