ISLAMABAD -- Iranian Ambassador to Pakistan Seyed Serajuddin Mousavi called on Pakistan Chief Election Commissioner Chief Justice (RTD) Irshad Hasan Khan, here on Monday and exchanged views on bilateral relations as well as the process of the forthcoming general elections.

The chief election commissioner of Pakistan, besides appraising the ambassador about the necessary arrangements made for holding the upcoming elections, said the election commission as an independent organization will spare no efforts to ensure a free, fair and transparent elections in the country.

He also rejected all claims and reports about the prepoll rigging as baseless, saying the election commission will not allow any one to interfere in the election affairs, IRNA reported.

Opposition parties including Benazir's Pakistan People Party and Nawaz Sharif-led Muslim league are accusing the government for prepoll rigging.

The election commission, he said has invited international observers and is ready to welcome Iranian observers too, if they desire so.

So far a 150-member team of observers of European Union have arrived Pakistan and most of them had already been deployed in various cities.

The general election of Pakistan is to be held on October 10.

The chief election commissioner observed that extensive campaign through electronic and print media was undertaken to motivate the people to register themselves as voters.

More than 94,00,000 supervisors for registration have visited every house in the country to collect the required data for registration of citizens as voters.

He also informed the ambassador that with view to further enhance the credibility of the forthcoming elections, the election commission banned bulk transfers of civil servants and restricted the misuse of state resources for unfair advantage of any political party or a contesting candidate. Directive has also been issued to the incumbent ministers to resign from their respective portfolios if they intended to contest forthcoming elections.

Pointing to the deep rooted cultural, religious and historical relations between his country and Iran, the chief election commissioner underscored the need for further strengthening cooperation in all fields between the two brotherly countries.

Chief Justice (RTD) Hasan Khan, in the meeting besides appreciating the personal role of the Iranian ambassador in developing relations between Tehran and Islamabad has also emphasized for the exchange of experiences between the two sides especially on election affairs.

The Iranian ambassador while expressing his country's readiness for the exchange of experiences has also appraised the Pakistan chief election commissioner about the elections held in Iran during the last two decades.

Mousavi also stressed for further strengthening bilateral relations between the two countries.
