KIMBERLEY - Arjuna Ranatunga's 86 runs led four Sri Lankan batsmen who reached half centuries Tuesday as the world champions scored 295 for seven against Pakistan in a one-day international. Both teams lost their opening matches to host South Africa in the triangular series that began last weekend. Pakistan faced an imposing target in its innings and only had 49 overs, instead of the normal 50, after being penalized for a slow over rate during the Sri Lankan innings.

Sri Lanka won the toss and chose to bat in ideal conditions. Openers Sanath Jayasuriya and Romesh Kaluwitharana put on 92 runs in the first 15 overs. Kaluwitharana was run out at 54, off 52 balls with seven boundaries, and Jayasuriya was caught behind at 57. But Aravinda De Silva and Ranatunga supplied some brilliant batting to also reach half centuries.

Ranatunga's 43rd 50 in one-day cricket came off 60 balls in 68 minutes while De Silva's 48th one-day half century came off 63 balls in 90 minutes. Their 142-run partnership took 98 minutes off 145 balls. De Silva was bowled by Wasim Akram off the first ball of the 46th over, and Ranatunga fell in the 49th over when he was caught at short midoff.
