TEHRAN (Mehr News Agency)—Hojjatoleslam Abdulaziz Hakim, the chairman of the Supreme Assembly for the Islamic Revolution in Iraq (SAIRI), said here Friday that drafting a new constitution is a fundamental and significant matter for the Iraqi nation and the people of Iraq will make the final decision on it.

Hakim, who was in Tehran to attend the third conference of the World Ahl-ul Bait Assembly, told the Mehr News Agency that obviously drafting a constitution is a fundamental matter for every nation, especially the Iraqi nation, which suffered greatly at the hands of the despotic Baath regime.

“In our opinion, first a council should be selected to make a draft of the constitution that should then be presented to the Iraqi nation, which should make the final decision about the laws of the country,” he said.

Hakim stated that it is the position of SAIRI as well as the religious scholars of Najaf that the Iraqi nation must make the final decision on the constitution.

Asked what measures SAIRI had taken to obtain the release of the two Iranian documentary filmmakers detained by U.S. forces in Iraq, he said that the issue would be followed up seriously in order to reach an acceptable solution.
