U.S. lying about global consensus against Iran: Leader

TEHRAN – The flow of energy resources through the Persian Gulf will definitely be endangered if the United States makes “any mistake about Iran”, warned Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei here on Sunday.

Speaking in a ceremony marking the 17th demise anniversary of Imam Khomeini at the mausoleum of the Founder of the Islamic Revolution, Ayatollah Khamenei addressed the United States, saying, “You are not able to provide security for the energy route in the region.

“Iran is not the initiator of any war. We have a lofty ideal -- building a country that meets people’s material and spiritual needs -- and are doing our best to realize it.”

The Leader stated that Iran is not a threat to any country, adding, “We are committed to our national interests, and whoever threatens our national interests will face the Iranians’ wrath.”

He dismissed the claims of the U.S. and the Zionist regime about the existence of a global consensus against Iran, pointing out that no such global consensus exists because the Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC), independent countries, 116 member countries of the Non-Aligned Movement, and even other countries that are pressured by the United States support Iran’s brave endeavors to develop nuclear technology.

Ayatollah Khamenei noted that no honest government in the world would agree to forgo new sources of energy and thus be forced to beg Western countries, adding that most countries approve of Iran’s actions and the consensus of a few hegemonistic countries means nothing.

“We have not threatened any neighboring state and have established amicable ties with regional countries,” he said.

He called relations between Iran and European countries “sound and good”, adding that the ties would expand in the future due to Europe’s pressing need for energy.

Iran also enjoys good relations with Arab states, and the Arab world supports Iran’s stance toward the Palestinian cause, the Leader noted.

“We have explicitly and repeatedly declared that we do not need nuclear weapons because, unlike the United States, we do not seek to dominate the world and are not trying to impose unnecessary expenses on our nation,” the Leader said.

Addressing the U.S. administration, Ayatollah Khamenei said, “Compare your government and president with the Iranian government and president to realize your position in the world,” noting that the current U.S. government is the most hated government in U.S. history, while the present government in Iran is the country’s most popular government of the past century.

Over the past 27 years, the United States has lost no opportunity to inflict damage on the Islamic Republic, but, despite all this pressure and sabotage, the Iranian nation has developed more than ever, he observed.

Ayatollah Khamenei also said that a government whose record is stained with numerous crimes, including the Guantanamo, Abu Ghraib, and Kabul outrages, should not claim to be an upholder of human rights that is fighting against terrorism.

Earlier in his remarks, the Leader said the late Imam Khomeini, the Founder of the Islamic Revolution, awoke the Islamic world, adding, “The Imam has departed and is no longer with us, but the Imam’s thoughts, soul, teachings, and ideology have remained with us and the Islamic ummah.

The Islamic Republic of Iran is the brainchild of Imam Khomeini, he said, noting that thanks to his unique characteristics, Imam Khomeini turned the Iranian nation into one of the most influential nations in the world and the most important nation in the region.
