PERTH, Australia -- Top-seeded Russia defeated second-seeded Spain in consecutive singles matches to win its first Hopman Cup team title.

Nadia Petrova beat Spain's Anabel Medina Garrigues 6-0, 6-4 to lift Russia a 1-0 lead. Dmitry Tursunov then defeated Tommy Robredo 6-4, 7-5 to give Russia, appearing in its first Hopman Cup final, the win ahead of the informal mixed doubles match.

Tursunov, who has lived in the United States with his family since he was 12, said the win is a boost ahead of the Australian Open on Jan. 15. "The surface is the same, the balls are the same and these are the players we will be playing in Melbourne," Tursunov said. "It is always nice to win, it does not matter whether it is Davis Cup, Hopman Cup or any sort of Cup. Any win you get under your belt builds confidence."

Russia has not won the Hopman Cup in six previous appearances.
