Pope appointsnew ambassador to Iran

TEHRAN (IRNA) -- Pope Benedict XVI on Wednesday appointed French Archbishop Jean Paul Gobel as Vatican Ambassador to Iran.

Gobel, 65, was former ambassador of the Holy See to Nicaragua, Georgia, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Senegal, Mali, Guinea Bissau, ANSA said.
Gobel will replace the outgoing ambassador Angelo Mottola.
