France to summon US ambassador to protest comments on nationalist activist’s death

France will summon U.S. Ambassador Charles Kushner to protest Trump administration comments regarding the beating death of nationalist activist Quentin Deranque, AP reported Sunday.

Foreign Affairs Minister Jean-Noel Barrot reacted sharply to a U.S. State Department post claiming Deranque was killed by “left-wing militants,” a statement Barrot characterized as the political instrumentalization of a tragedy.

Deranque died from injuries sustained during a fight at a student meeting in Lyon, an event that has exacerbated political tensions ahead of next year’s presidential election.

While President Emmanuel Macron has called for calm, the U.S. State Department asserted that “violent radical leftism is on the rise” and poses a threat to public safety.

Currently, seven individuals face preliminary charges in Lyon, including intentional homicide and criminal conspiracy.

Beyond this incident, Barrot intends to confront Kushner over “unjustified” U.S. sanctions targeting former EU Commissioner Thierry Breton and ICC Judge Nicolas Guillou.

This marks the second time Kushner has been summoned; he previously skipped a meeting regarding his criticisms of “France’s efforts to combat antisemitism.”
