NEW YORK "La Montagne Sainte Victoire," one of Paul Cezanne's most famous paintings, sold for 38 million dollars Monday, the Phillips Auction House said.
The painting, completed in 1888-89, was one of seven post-impressionist works belonging to the German collector Heinz Berggruen offered for sale.
Four other works by Cezanne and two by Vincent van Gogh also were to be sold for an estimated total value of 80 million dollars, AFP reported.
The work, one of Cezanne's paintings of the famous mountain in southern France overhanging Aix-en-Provence, is considered one of his most important.
Berggruen, 87, was born in Germany and came to the United States as a refugee in 1936.
In 1949, he opened a gallery in Paris which became legendary for the quality of works it sold.
He sold a significant share of his collection last year to the National Museum of Berlin.
