Iranians Famed for Hospitality Worldwide

July 8, 2001 - 0:0
A group of over 100 motorcyclists on Friday rampaged through the streets of Flaverjan, Isfahan Province, beating up and causing bodily harm to the Afghan refugees residing in the city.

The horrible incident drew various reactions from different circles in the country, most of whom condemned this inhumane and uncivil act. However, some tried to justify this incident as the consequence of economic pressure resulting from rising unemployment and inflation on the underprivileged strata.

Although the arguments mostly focussed on the fact that there have been similar attacks against immigrants and refugees in the European countries for the same economic reasons, these arguments clearly disregarded the rich culture and ancient civilization of Iranians, who are known worldwide for their hospitality and benevolence.

Against this backdrop, it is quite clear that economic pressure is no justification for treating Afghan refugees the way they were treated in Flaverjan on Friday. Besides, the Afghans have suffered a lot in their country under the rule of the Taleban, who have deprived the Afghan people of all their fundamental rights. This is why the Afghan refugees were welcomed by the Islamic Republic as guests and provided with basic necessities in line with religious and national duties of the Iranians. The same duties dictate that Afghan refugees should be allowed to stay in this country until there are better conditions for their return home.

Surely those who got involved in this ugly act against Afghans in Flaverjan have no sense of their national or religious duties and are alien to the rich Iranian culture and civilization as well as the noble objectives of the Islamic Revolution.

According to statistics released by the UNHCR, Iran currently hosts the largest refugee population in the world. This proves that Iranian people are the most hospitable nation on the globe, and what happened in Flaverjan was just an ugly criminal act committed by a bunch of hooligans who should be removed from society to preserve the international prestige of the noble Iranian nation.
