TEHRAN -- Head of Political-Security Committee of the Majlis Article 90 Commission, Jamileh Kadivar said here Sunday that the media should work toward strengthening global peace and tranquility.

In an interview with IRNA, she added that if the media fail to perform their role properly, one might expect disastrous consequences.

The media, she pointed out, should take positive steps toward establishing peace by challenging warmongering views.

Kadivar, an MP representing Tehran constituency, commented on the priorities of the conference on coalition for peace and called on the media to identify the fundamental points which contribute to the campaigns for either wars or peace.

The main task of the media, she said, should be directed toward strengthening peace.

She added that "dialogue among civilizations" might contribute to understanding among states which will naturally lead to the establishment of peace and stability in the world.

The role of the media is, therefore, quite crucial for the establishment of peaceful dialogues and can provide the grounds for peace, stability and understanding.

"Dialogue among civilizations" or "coalition for peace" are general issues which might include various subdivisions, she noted.

The lawmaker underlined that the significant institutes involved in the political, economic, cultural and media should certainly contribute to the realization of the goals set by "dialogue among civilizations" and "coalition for peace." Turning to ways of strengthening peace coalition, she said that the Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA) should attempt to revise its overall policies and restructure its foreign bureaus to be in position to contribute to strengthening peace.

She underlined that the most significant criteria for ensuring peace coalition is to build up a climate for this at the national level in such a way that its effect might be evident internationally. She recalled, "Extensive communication among the world media might also be taken as a positive step toward the realization of peace." On global and regional threats against and opportunities for peace, she pointed to foreign threats against Iran, and said, "We should act in a coordinated manner so that we can respond to foreign threats."
