SYDNEY -- A 10-year-old Aboriginal girl escaped with a leg wound after being bitten by a crocodile in a remote part of northern Australia, police said on Sunday.

The girl was playing by herself in the shallow waters of a waterhole at an outstation in the Kakadu National Park, about 300 km (185 miles) from Darwin, when a crocodile bit her on the leg on Saturday afternoon, a police spokesman said.

"The girl managed to pull away from the crocodile and seek assistance from her family who were nearby," police said. "She suffered a significant wound to her lower right leg."

The girl, whose injuries were not life threatening, was treated at a clinic in the park and then taken to the Royal Darwin Hospital, Reuters reported.

The size of the crocodile was not known, but park rangers were searching the waterhole, police said.
