JAKARTA (Reuters) -- An Indonesian woman was crushed to death while queuing for free rice handed out by a charity ahead of the Muslim festival Eid-al Fitr, which marks marking the end of the Muslim fasting month of Ramadan, a local newspaper reported on Monday.

Kompas reported the 55-year-old woman had been trapped among some 6,000 people -- mostly women -- jostling for donations of 20 kg (40 lbs) bags of rice donated by a local Buddhist charity.

Several other women fainted in the incident in Indonesia's West Java city of Bandung, some 140 kilometers (85 miles) southeast of Jakarta.
