New playground to help children's therapy

Most children enjoy playing outside: running, jumping and climbing with their friends.

A fundraiser this weekend hopes to help the new Dell Children's Medical Center of Central Texas create a place where all kids can play.

Last year News 8 Austin's and Time Warner Cable's Kars & Kids event raised $10,000 for the cause.

Matthew Fielding was working on his balancing skills. The 3-year-old has multiple medical problems that have caused developmental delays. Each week he spends an hour in physical therapy, in addition to speech and occupational therapy.

"It's important. He needs to feel like a normal child, like every other child," Matthew's mom Jean Fielding said.

The new Dell Children's hopes to have a handicap playground for patients like Matthew to enjoy while working on their therapy.

"We are right by a courtyard. And so the thought was, so since we are going to be right there, let's do something that is fun and more appropriate for kids that'll be coming to the therapy department," senior pediatric physical therapist Paul Molanphy said.

It would not only be used for children who need physical therapy but for all young patients visiting the hospital.

It will also be motivation for the children who do need to work on specific skills, therapists say.

"It makes my job so much easier because all I have to do is walk outside and there's all this equipment lined up for me to help them want to move their bodies," Molanphy said.

The equipment for the Dell Children's playground costs around $100,000.

The hospital also hopes to raise the money through other local charity. Source: News 8 Austin
