TEHRAN – Chairman of the Assembly of Experts Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani has expressed hope that the March 14 parliamentary elections will be held in a competitive atmosphere so that a “strong” parliament will take effect.

“What is important is the quality of Majlis and the quality of elections. We should be vigilant and form a strong and powerful Majlis which would defend the objectives of the system and reduce pressure” on the country, Rafsanjani told the Assembly of Experts’ Sunday session.
According to the constitution, the Assembly of Experts is responsible to appoint the Supreme Leader and monitor his performance.
Rafsanjani thanked those who turned out in February 11 rallies marking the anniversary of the victory of Islamic Revolution in 1979.
“People were ready to show their love to revolution and Iran and I personally hope that they will demonstrate this great unity and fervor once more in the Esfand 24 (March 14) elections.”
He said the vote will fail to convey its message without people’s participation.
Rafsanjani stated that the enemies, who have greedily eyed on the system, will definitely be disappointed if the “ballot boxes will be full of votes”.
The cleric also praised the Guardian Council’s decision to approve some parliament candidates who were initially banned from running by executive and supervisory committees.
“A competitive election is what the enemies of revolution cannot tolerate and we should be vigilant not to fall into the enemies’ trap.”
Turning to Iran’s nuclear issue, he said it is now quite clear that the U.S. has been seeking to use Iran’s nuclear program as a pretext to increase pressure on the Islamic Republic.
“We also accept the fact that all countries should obey the international regulations but their behavior toward Iran’s nuclear issue is just a pretext.”
Efforts to reinforce national unity
Addressing the Expediency Council at the beginning of the meeting, President Mahmud Ahmadinejad said the government is making serious efforts to reinforce national unity and promote solidarity among Muslims.
“We are making efforts to abolish hostilities and reinforce unity… We are trying to tell the Islamic states that Iran is not standing against them.”
The president also said the Assembly of Experts which is composed of “the most qualified, devout and sympathetic officials” has a very high status in the Islamic system
