TEHRAN -- Two works by Russian painter Karl Pavlovich Briullov were donated to the Astan-e Qods Museum last week.

Briullov’s “The Storm and the Sea” and “Strangely” have been donated by Iranian collector Najaf Mehrkish, the museum’s Visual Arts Section curator Jamshid Amirian said in a press release published on Wednesday.
According to Amirian, the works measuring 74x46 and 96x60 centimeter respectively originally belonged to the late Jalal Afkhami-Moqaddam Tabrizi, an Iranian citizen.
No more details about the works were given in the press release.
Called Karl the Great by his friends, Briullov (1799-1852) was the first Russian painter of international standing. He is regarded as a key figure in the transition from the Russian neoclassicism to romanticism.
Works by Antonio Catalani, Toni Bordignon, Arturo Bonanomi, and several other European artists are on display at the Astan-e Qods Razavi Museum, which is adjacent to the Shrine of Imam Reza (AS) in Mashhad.
