Six suspected militants killed near Afghan capital

KABUL (AFP) – U.S.-led forces have killed six suspected militants in an area outside the Afghan capital Kabul where 10 French soldiers were killed in an ambush four months ago, the coalition said Tuesday.

The six were killed on Monday in Sarobi district, about 60 kilometers (35 miles) east of Kabul, ""to diminish the Taliban's terrorist network in Kabul province,"" the force said in a statement.
Three other suspected rebels were captured in the operation, which targeted one insurgent believed to be coordinating Taliban activities in and around Kabul, it added.
""As coalition forces approached the militant's compound they were engaged by small-arms fire. The force returned fire, killing two armed militants,"" it said, adding that four more rebels were killed in a subsequent gunfight.
Several dozen women and children in the compound escaped unharmed, the statement said.
About 70,000 international forces under U.S. and NATO command are in Afghanistan to help Kabul crush a Taliban-led insurgency, which has gained pace over the past two years.
The insurgency was launched just months after the hardline Taliban regime, which took power in 1996, was ousted from government in a U.S.-led invasion in late 2001.
The mountain ambush of the French troops in Sarobi in August was the deadliest ground attack on international troops in Afghanistan since 2001.
