Iranian tele-journalists home after Azerbaijan ordeal

Two Iranian TV journalists have returned home after a harrowing 15 days in a grim Azerbaijani jail in the capital city of Baku.

The two, producer Sha'ban-Ali Kayvani, 48, and cameraman Massoud Vaezi, 43, had completed an assignment from Iran's state broadcaster, IRIB, in Azerbaijan and were on their way back to Iran by train when they were arrested in the city of Lankaran near the Iranian border.
After being hauled off to a filthy prison in the capital Baku, they were told that they had been filming a ""restricted"" location -- something they both deny.
Even though the charges were proven incorrect, Azeri authorities claimed that the reason for the detention of the two journalists was the expiry of their visas.
Inspection of their passports showed that their entry permits were still valid.
Azeri authorities next accused the filmmakers of having completed their customs declaration forms incorrectly when they had entered Azerbaijan.
After the allegation was disproven, Azeri authorities said they had to check the captives' fingerprints with Interpol to make sure they were not on the wanted list.
Officials in Baku finally released the Iranian journalists but not before cleaning 660 minutes of video-tape footage that the filmmakers had recorded as part of their assignment.
