Photo exhibit highlights Tehran

TEHRAN -- Tehran’s Aran Gallery features capital Tehran in photos taken by a group of veteran photographers in an exhibition that opened on Friday.
Selected by Arash Hanaii, the exhibit contains a collection of social documentary photographs with the central theme of Tehran taken over the past 4 decades.The latest works by deceased photographer Bahman Jalali featuring Tehran’s Haft-e Tir Square are among the works on display at the show.
Photos by deceased Kaveh Golestan record Tehran of the pre-Islamic Revolution showing the “Halabiabad” neighborhood in southern Tehran. Halabi means tin plates and refers to the houses made from used tin cans in which poor people lived in abject poverty in former times.
Jasem Qazbanpur is featuring photos of Tehran’s bombardment by the Iraqi regime during the Iran-Iraq war (1980-1988).
Photos of old neighborhoods in southern Tehran by Majid Bakhtiari, murals covering walls in Tehran by Aidin Rahimi, and photos of sidewalks along Enqelab Street taken by Tahmineh Monzavi are also seen among the photos on show.
Mehdi Vosuqnia is depicting the old district of shoemakers on Seyyed Vali Street in Tehran’s Grand Bazaar neighborhood.
A comparative photo display features pictures of locations in today’s Tehran taken by Mohsen Yazdipur next to pictures of the same locations in the Tehran of bygone days taken by deceased photographer Mahmud Pakzad.
The exhibit was arranged with the aim of revitalizing documentary photography, said Hanaii, adding, “This type of photography was more popular in older times when galleries were hanging more of these types of photos.
“We aimed to emphasize documentary photography and hope that these types of exhibits continue to promote this aspect of photography.
“Documentary photographers will also be encouraged to display their works if they lack a budget to publish a catalogue of their works.
A catalogue featuring works on display is also available at the exhibit. The show will run for one month at the Aran Gallery located at 12th Dey Alley, off North Kheradmand St.
