KABUL, Afghanistan (Dispatches) – Afghan President Hamid Karzai says the death of Osama bin Laden in a strike in Pakistan proves that the fight against terrorists should be focused on the neighboring country. He says he hopes bin Laden's death will mean the end of terrorism, AP reported.
Karzai tells an assembly of district government officials Monday that this is ""a very important day"" and that bin Laden received his due punishment. The hall erupted into applause following the comment.
He said the death of bin Laden in Pakistan proves he was correct in chastising international forces for concentrating their fight in Afghan villages rather than insurgent safe havens abroad.
Meanwhile, Karzai called on the Taliban on Monday to refrain from fighting after the killing of bin Laden and said the Taliban must learn a lesson from his death, Reuters reported.
Karzai described the killing of bin Laden by U.S. special forces north of the Pakistani capital Islamabad as ""important news"".
""The Taliban must learn a lesson from this. The Taliban should refrain from fighting,"" Karzai told a nationally televised news conference
