TEHRAN – Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei has said that “police power” is essential to establish security in the society, but this power should be along with “justice, generosity and mercy”.
The Leader made the remarks during a meeting with police force commanders in Tehran on Sunday.
He described police force as “symbol of sovereignty and security” and stated that establishment of “individual, public, moral, spiritual and mental security” in the society is one of the most important responsibilities of the police force.
He also stated that the police force should not be satisfied at any level in providing security such as promoting road safety and making cities and border areas secure.
Ayatollah Khamenei also said providing “mental security” is more important than countering “physical insecurity”.
The Leader stated that the “powerful action” by police is essential to create security in the society, adding that this power does not mean oppression.
He went on to say that Iran does not seek to have a Hollywoodian-style police power which causes insecurity.
The Leader added that the behavior of the U.S. police toward the black people is an example of “cruel power”.
Elsewhere in his remarks, the Leader praised the efforts made by the police during Noruz holidays (the Persian New Year holidays which last for about two weeks).
