Culture minister visits painter Parviz Kalantari

TEHRAN - Minister of Culture and Islamic Guidance Ali Jannati went to Parviz Kalantari’s home in Tehran on Friday to visit the 85-year-old veteran painter who has been bedridden since suffering a massive stroke last year.

His triptych painting entitled “Iranian City” was set up at the UN-Habitat headquarters in Nairobi in October 2005 during the observance of the World Habitat Day.


Iranian docs vying for Golden Panda

TEHRAN – Three short documentaries by Iranian filmmaker Hushang Mirzai are competing in the 3rd Golden Panda North America International Short Film Festival, which is currently underway in the Canadian city of Richmond.

The films are “Taftan”, “I Dance with God” and “Something like My Eyes”.

Winners will be announced during the closing ceremony on November 20.


Librarian Puri Soltani dies at 85

TEHRAN – Librarian Puri Soltani who is considered as one of the pioneers of modern librarianship in Iran, died of natural causes at Iranmehr Hospital in Tehran on Saturday. She was 85.

Her funeral procession is scheduled to commence at the National Library and Archives of Iran today at 9:30 a.m. and she will be buried in Tehran’s Behesht-e Zahra Cemetery.


Cinéma Vérité to screen docs by Donn Alan Pennebaker

TEHRAN – A lineup of five movies by renowned American documentarian Donn Alan Pennebaker will go on screen at the 9th edition of Cinéma Vérité, the Iranian international festival for documentary films, which will be held in Tehran from December 13 to 19.

The lineup includes “Daybreak Express”, “Opening in Moscow”, “DeLorean” and “Lambert & Co.”

Pennebaker is one of the pioneers of direct cinema, whose films were usually be shot with a hand-held camera. He eschewed voice-over narration and interviews in favor of a “simple” portrayal of events typical of the direct cinema style.
