TEHRAN Some 10,000 tourists entered Iran via Bajgiran border between Dec. 22, 1998 and Jan 21, 1999, said Khorasan governor-general's office director general for economic affairs, Seyed Hossein Ahmadi, on Monday. In comparison to last year, the number of tourists rose by 40 percent this year, said Ahmadi. In order to improve tourism industry in Khorasan Province, a touring, trading and recreational township is to be built on Bajgiran border, for which a plot of land 80 hectares in area has been earmarked, he added.

He also said that a permanent exhibition of transit vehicles would be held at the township. Bajgiran border is approximately 200 kilometers northwest of Mashhad, the provincial capital. In order to develop tourism industry and facilitate entry of the tourists, some 10 flights to and fro between Mashhad and foreign countries are conducted per week, he noted. He further said that during a week, some 370 pilgrims and passengers fly to Mashhad only from Kuwait.
