TEHRAN – The ECO Cultural Institute (ECI) will be holding a cultural week on Persian poet and mathematician Omar Khayyam (1048-1131) in Astana, the capital of Kazakhstan.
The cultural week will open at the Palace of Independence on June 14, the ECI announced in a press release on Tuesday
The ECI is affiliated with the Economic Cooperation Organization.
Several programs including exhibitions of calligraphy, miniature, and calligraphic-painting with the central theme of Khayyam have been arranged for the week.
The artworks have been created by Iranian masters Yadollah Kaboli, Gholamhossein Amirkhani, Nasrollah Afjeii, Reza Badrossama and Mohammad Heidari.
Poems from the Rubaiyat of Khayyam will be performed during concerts by Iranian singer Abdolhossein Mokhtabad.
In addition, a group of Iranian and Kazakh musicians will give performances, which will be conducted by ECI Music Department Director Arash Amini.
ECI Director Hojjatollah Ayyubi and a group of Iranian and Kazakh cultural officials are expected to attend the opening ceremony.
Omar Khayyam was one of the most prominent scholars of medieval times, with remarkable contributions in the fields of mathematics and astronomy. His worldwide fame today mainly comes from a number of quatrains attributed to him that have tended to overshadow his brilliant scientific achievements.
