Lala Amarnath Dies at 88

NEW DELHI All-rounder Lala Amarnath, the first Indian to score a century in test cricket and the first captain to lead Independent India, died in his sleep on Saturday at the age of 88.
Amarnath, whose sons Surinder and Mohinder also played test cricket for India, had been seriously ill for more than a month, the United News India (UNI) quoted his third son Rajinder, who has also been a first-class cricketer, as saying.
Stylish and flamboyant as a batsman and later outspoken as a commentator, Amarnath played 24 tests for India. He made his only test century on his debut against England in Bombay in the 1933/34 series.
Born on September 11, 1911 in Lahore, the all-rounder scored 878 test runs at an average of 24.38 and captured 45 test wickets with his slow-medium deliveries at 32.91 runs apiece.
