Iran elected best-performing national committee of ICID

TEHRAN – The board of directors of the International Commission on Irrigation and Drainage (ICID) has elected the Iranian National Committee on Irrigation and Drainage (IRNCID) as the best-performing national committee for a three-year period.

The ICID was established in 1995. It is a leading scientific, technical, and professional not-for-profit international organization working in the field of irrigation, drainage, and flood management to promote and achieve sustainable agriculture water management. 

The IRNCID has been elected among 78 members based on its performance of the members within three years. It’s the third time that the IRNCID is selected as the best-performing committee, IRNA quoted Mehrzad Ehsani, the secretary general of IRNCID, as saying.

The Best-Performing National Committee Award (BPNCA) is presented triennially at every ICID Congress, with the main objective of recognizing the contributions made by a National Committee to fulfill ICID’s mission and objectives.

It is presented at every triennial Congress starting from the 18th ICID Congress (Montreal) in 2002. The performance of the award-winning National Committee is judged by a Panel of Judges based on the performance of the `Candidate National Committee’ during the 3-year period between the immediate past two consecutive Congresses.

The secretariat of this international commission is located in New Delhi, India. The 7th Best Performing National Committee Award will be presented during the 25th ICID International Congress and 74th International Executive Council (IEC) Meeting to be held from 1-8 November 2023, Vizag, Andhra Pradesh, India.

IRNCID representative will be presented a Trophy and a Citation Plaque during the Congress.

These awards initiated hitherto, have been presented to the Korean National Committee, followed by the National Committees of Egypt, Iran, South Africa, Korea, and Iran during the subsequent Congresses held in the years 2005, 2008, 2011, and 2014, 2017 and 2022 (postponed due to the outbreak of COVID-19 pandemic), respectively.

IRNCID

The Iranian National Committee on Irrigation and Drainage joined ICID in 1995 to facilitate the promotion of knowledge on irrigation and drainage networks, flood control, land and water management as well as water and environment conservation to maintain sustainable development in Iran.

Iran has had the honor of having four vice presidents of ICID. It won the award of BPNC for its outstanding achievements and contribution to ICID activities for the periods of 2005-2008 and 2014-2017.

The IRNICD with its general secretariat in Tehran, is affiliated with the Ministry of Energy and is constituted of High Councils, Executive Board, Technical Working Groups, and Regional Committees, having about 4000 members composed of experts, professors, and Students.

The National Committee hosted the 28th IEC meeting with a special session in Tehran in 1997 and the 4th Asian Regional Conference on Participatory Irrigation Management in Tehran, in 2007.

Also, Iran hosted the 62nd annual IEC meeting and the 8th International Micro-Irrigation Congress in 2011. The event coincided with the 21st Congress on Irrigation and Drainage which is held every three years.
