Iran rejects role in Ukraine war

TEHRAN- The charge that Iran is involved in the armed confrontation between Russia and Ukraine was flatly denied by Iran’s ambassador to the UN.

Saeed Iravani vehemently denied the “unfounded allegations leveled against the Islamic Republic of Iran in the joint statements delivered by the Permanent Representative and the Foreign Minister of Ukraine” in a letter to UN Security Council President Yamazaki Kazuyuki on Friday.

Ukraine has falsely alleged that Iran is giving military support to the Russian Federation in the Ukraine conflict, in violation of UNSC Resolution 2231, according to the Iranian envoy.

He went on to add, “The Islamic Republic of Iran has constantly taken a stance of impartiality since the outset of the Ukraine conflict and this principled position remains unchanged. Furthermore, Iran has consistently advocated for peace and the immediate cessation of hostilities in Ukraine and continues to do so.”

“Therefore, any claim regarding Iran’s involvement in the sale, export, or transfer of arms in contravention of its international obligations and UNSC Resolution 2231 is completely unfounded and categorically rejected. Iran once more reaffirms its unwavering commitment to adhering to international humanitarian law,” he stated.

Iravani further said, “I would also like to take this opportunity to reject the identical allegation and inappropriate reference made against my country in a joint statement delivered by Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania in connection with the Security Council briefing on 10 January 2024 under the agenda item entitled ‘Maintenance of peace and security of Ukraine’.”

In addition, he urged the president of the UNSC to distribute the letter as a Security Council document.

Last year, he also reacted to recent U.S. accusations against Iran regarding the war in Ukraine, describing them as “baseless.”

In a letter to the United Nations Security Council, Iravani said the U.S. accusations against Iran are unsubstantiated.

“Upon instructions from my Government, I am writing in response to the letter dated 11 September 2023, from the Permanent Representatives of the United States of America to the United Nations addressed to the President of the Security Council (S/2023/661), wherein the United States, in continuation of its repeated and baseless accusations and spread of misinformation, has once again attempted to level unsubstantiated claims against the Islamic Republic of Iran about the ongoing conflict in Ukraine,” Iravani said in the letter.

He added, “We underscore once more that the United States' repeated and unjustified request to the Secretariat to conduct the so-called investigation into the alleged violation of resolution 2231 lacks a legal basis. Neither resolution 2231 nor the relevant Note by the President of the Security Council (S/2016/44) authorize such an unlawful mandate. We reiterate our call to the Secretariat of the United Nations to diligently fulfill its mandate, as outlined in the note of the President of the Security Council (S/2016/44). Considering Article 100 of the United Nations Charter, the UN Secretariat must resist yielding to the influence exerted by the United States and certain member states acting in bad faith and refrain from legitimizing baseless and politically motivated claims lacking proper substantiation.”

Iran has long rejected any form of military involvement in the Ukraine war. Nevertheless, the West continues to level accusations against Iran in this regard.

Back in August 2023, a top Iranian general told a military forum in Russia that those who ignited and keep exacerbating the Ukraine war should reconsider their approach and know that jeopardizing the security of others can lead to unpredictable reactions.

“Those who triggered the Ukraine war and those who are exacerbating it should reconsider their approaches,” General Aziz Nasirzadeh, the deputy chief of the joint staff of Iran’s armed forces, said.

General Nasirzadeh, who led an Iranian military delegation to Moscow to participate in the Army 2023, stated that independent countries that respect territorial integrity should exchange views on how to deal with the crises and insecurities caused by the U.S. and its allies.

He said the Ukraine war would have long-term consequences for the region and the larger world, which was caused by the West's extravagance and insistence to maintain its hegemony.

The commander also said the fact that the Zionist regime was founded by Britain and supported by the U.S. is another example of unilateralism and organized oppression against a nation.
