TEHRAN The U.S. temporarily closed down its consulates in Istanbul and Adna, Turkey, in a bid to prevent terrorist operations.
The daily Milliyet wrote on Tuesday that an official at the U.S. Embassy in Ankara confirmed the news about the shutdown of two American consulates and said the measure had been taken for security purposes.
The U.S. has recently obtained information about planned attacks on its political missions in Turkey, Milliyet wrote without mentioning how long the consulates would be shut.
The daily further said that while tightened security measures remain in effect for the American Embassy in Ankara, the size of the mission's staff will be reduced.
The U.S. had previously closed down 13 of its embassies in different countries on account of mounting anti-American sentiments.
The U.S. will possibly shut down its embassies in more countries.
