Riots Flare Up in Philippines, Three Killed
Interior Secretary Jose Lina said a policeman and two civilians were killed in the worst rioting in the Philippine capital since former dictator Ferdinand Marcos was overthrown 15 years ago, AFP reported.
President Gloria Arroyo earlier said two policemen guarding the palace were killed by protesters demanding the release and return to power of Estrada, but Lina said it was later established that one officer survived a lynching.
National Police Chief Leandro Mendoza said the other policeman was killed by a shot from a homemade shotgun, a popular weapon in Manila's underworld.
The Red Cross said at least 101 protesters sustained "various injuries" from cuts, bullets and gashes, with 36 patients needing confinement in hospitals and the rest sent home after first-aid treatment.
Estrada, a former movie star, has a strong following among the urban poor.
Estrada was thrown in jail last week to stand trial on the charge of economic plunder, punishable by death, sparking massive street protests by tens of thousands of his supporters.
