LOS ANGELES -- Led by their all-star from another planet, the Orlando Magic simply were out of this world. Tracy McGrady scored 39 points and the Magic put on a stunning shooting display in the first half, cruising to a 109-100 road victory over the Houston Rockets in the NBA on Saturday night.

McGrady made 14-of-32 shots, grabbed nine rebounds and handed out seven assists. He scored 23 points in the first half, when Orlando shot a blistering 61 percent (25-of-41) to open a 67-48 advantage.

"McGrady is in a class with (Minnesota all-star Kevin) Garnett," Houston Rockets coach Rudy Tomjanovich said. "In the old era, you would think he was a guy from another planet, DPA reported.

"I know I have to step up and get things done, whether it's making a pass or making a shot," McGrady said.

McGrady's teammates made the basket look like Jupiter as well. In the first quarter, the Magic made 8-of-9 3-pointers, including five by Darrell Armstrong.

"The basket was looking very big," said Armstrong, who scored 15 of his 27 points in the opening period. "I got mad early in the game when Mike Miller passed me the ball and I didn't take the three. But after that I was taking the shots when the guys found me and I was making everything I shot."

The Magic scored a season-high 42 points in the first quarter, making 17-of-24 shots overall and impressing Tomjanovich.

"That was the best shooting exhibition I've seen all year," he said. "The first three, we were defending McGrady and they rotated to the open shot. But the other six, they just came down and flung that thing up. It was a barrage."

Pat Garrity scored 17 points and Miller added 15 for Orlando (27- 25), which finished at 51 per cent (40-of-87) and moved two games above .500 for the first time this season.

The Rockets, who have lost 13 of their last 14 meetings with the Magic, tried to rally in the second half behind Steve Francis and Cuttino Mobley, who scored 27 points each.

Houston pulled to within seven points twice in the last 3 1/2 minutes, but McGrady turned back the first charge with a basket and two free throws and Armstrong ended the second with six foul shots in the last 34 seconds.

Elsewhere in the NBA: Cleveland 114, Chicago 101. The team with the longest current winning streak is the Cavaliers, whose run grew to four games with a victory at Chicago. Lamond Murray scored 37 points, red-hot Andre Miller added 18, 15 assists and eight rebounds and Tyrone hill made his season debut with 16 and 15 boards for Cleveland. Chicago has lost three in a row.

Seattle 99, Boston 79 Gary Payton scored 19 points, Brent Barry contributed 17, nine rebounds and nine assists and Rookie Predrag Drobnjak added a season- high 16 for the supersonics, who had lost five of their last six home games. Paul Pierce scored 24 points and Antoine Walker added 18 but the all-star duo combined to make just 14-of-40 shots as Boston fell to 2-2 on its seven-game road trip.

La Clippers 119, Dallas 110 At Los Angeles, Eric Piatkowski more than picked up the slack for the injured Quentin Richardson, scoring a career-high 36 points.

Piatkowski made 11-of-19 shots, including 5-of-8 three-pointers, as the Clippers ended a slump that had seen them lose four of their last five games. Juwan Howard scored 23 points to lead Dallas (36-16), which has lost straight games for the first time since January 3-5.
