Iran Wins World Students Greco-Roman Wrestling Title

EDMONTON -- Iran stood on the highest podium of the 5th World Students' Greco-Roman Wrestling Championships held in Edmonton, Canada.

During the two-event world-class Greco-Roman wrestling event attended by 19 countries, the Iranian side bagged four golds and one silver to lift the trophy with 62 points.

Collecting 56 and 45 points, Turkey and China finished runner-up and third respectively while Japan, the United States and South Korea ranked fourth to sixth with 36, 33 and 25 points.

The 5th World Students' Greco-Roman Wrestling Championships ended Tuesday afternoon (local time) in the Physical Education Complex of Alberta University, Edmonton.

The four gold medals of Iran were grabbed by Hassan Rangraz, Ali Ashkani, Seyed Hossein Mar'ashian and Alireza Gharibi and their teammate Mahdi Nassiri snatched the sole silver medal.

In 55kg category, world champion in 2001 Rangraz managed to beat his Korean opponent, Park Yun Chun 6-2 in final.

Two-times champion of Asia in 2000 and 2001 and the fifth-placed wrestler of the world and Sydney Olympic Games, Ashkani, demolished Jung Hyung Hu of Korea 11-5 and took the 60kg gold.

Nassiri, who won the gold medal of Asian 66kg class in 2001, lost to a wrestler from Turkey 4-3 and finished second, IRNA reported.

Asian silver medalist in 2002, Seyed Hossein Mar'ashian, narrowly defeated his Belarussian rival in 74kg final and added another gold to the Iranian asset.

Former world youth runner-up and Asian champion in 2001, Gharibi, overcame the Chinese finalist, Lee Ren, 4-2 to snatch the coveted gold.
