QAZVIN -- Iran intends to improve its telecommunications network by launching a fiber optic network in late December, Minister of Post, Telegraph and Telephone Ahmad Mo'tamedi said here Sunday.

"With the opening of this project, Iran's communication capacity will keep up with future needs in the next 20 years and guarantee access to international telecommunication networks," the minister added.

He said that Iran had targeted 1,858 telecommunication projects, for which the country has spent 1,160 billion rials, to be completed in time for the government week, which kicked off Saturday, August 24, IRNA reported.

Mo'tamedi noted that some 8,000 telecommunication projects worth 6,210 billion rials were inaugurated in the last Iranian calendar year (ended March 20, 2002).
