The U.S. has become a threat to itself, too…
I can’t help but imagine what a glorious world we might have were there to be accord between the U.S. and Iran, and if not actual accord, at least a Middle East where the U.S. treats each country in the region individually and equally, determining policies and initiatives and even criticism in a two-way give and take, the critique based solely on whether any actor is pursuing their own foreign policies with an aim to rid the region of violence and focus on beneficial, mutual trade and better relations.

Middle Eastern monarchs look at the Trumps and see themselves
Almost 20 years ago when I was a graduate student living in Cairo, I published an article in a Washington-based journal called Middle East Insight. The magazine had a solid reputation, with a knack for scoring interviews with important people. A few years later, Middle East Insight disappeared. When I heard the news, I figured the magazine was too niche for an expanding media environment, shrugged my shoulders, and went on with life.

Summer 2018: a bit of fear and loathing are natural
A bit of fear and a bunch of loathing mark the days of intelligent people anywhere, and I’m hearing this from Iranian friends in Iran and in the US.
