TEHRAN – Officials from the Iranian and Chinese foreign ministries here on Sunday reviewed the murder of Muslim Uyghurs in China.

Iranian officials urged their Chinese counterparts to observe the rights of Muslims in China and prepare conditions for holding their religious ceremonies.
Top clerics in Iran like Ayatollah Nasser Makarem Shirazi and Ayatollah Lotfollah Safi Golpaygani have condemned the recent killings of Muslims in China and asked the Foreign Ministry to seriously pursue the issue.
In a recent interview with the Mehr News Agency, Chen Weiqing, the charge d’affaires of the Chinese Embassy in Tehran, said the incidents in Xinjiang were provoked by Chinese separatist groups based outside China and did not have any religious or ethnic overtones.
Chen said the unrest began on June 26 in a factory in Guangdong when some groups of workers clashed, and two workers were killed, one of whom was an Uyghur.
There has been tension between the Muslim Uyghurs and Han Chinese in the region for decades
