Scottish Parliament votes for full boycott of Israel, citing Gaza genocide

In a landmark move, the Scottish Parliament has voted to impose a full boycott of Israel and companies linked to its military operations.

The Green-led amendment, passed 62–31 with 21 abstentions, urges both the Scottish and UK governments to enact boycotts, divestment, and sanctions against entities complicit in what ministers called “genocide” in Gaza.

First Minister John Swinney confirmed Scotland will halt new public funding for arms firms supplying Israel, extending the freeze to the Scottish National Investment Bank and enterprise agencies. The decision follows mounting civilian casualties in Gaza, where UN agencies warn of famine and mass displacement under Israel’s blockade and bombardment.

Alongside the boycott, Scotland pledged £1 million in humanitarian aid, including a rapid-deployment field hospital for Gaza and treatment in Scotland for 20 injured children.

External Affairs Secretary Angus Robertson said history would judge leaders harshly if they failed to act, recalling the delayed recognition of the Srebrenica genocide.

Scottish Green MSP Patrick Harvie hailed the vote as “a precedent for governments across Europe” to challenge apartheid and collective punishment.
