U.S.-Israel war on Iran: IUJ denounces attacks on journalists, media outlets
The International Union of Journalists (IUJ) has issued a statement condemning attacks on journalists and media outlets in Iran following the joint U.S.-Israeli war on Iran that began on February 28. The IUJ stressed that those responsible for targeting media workers must be held accountable and face strict legal action.
Here is the text of the statement:
The International Union of Journalists (IUJ) expresses deep concern and strongly condemns the rising number of attacks on journalists and media outlets worldwide during the war against Iran.
The primary duty of working journalists is to deliver accurate, factual, and fair information to the public. Our work is strictly professional, free from political bias and hidden motives. Yet, journalists are increasingly becoming the first targets in areas of war and conflict. The IUJ stresses that attacking a media organization is not just about destroying a building; it is a direct attack on freedom of speech, the public’s right to information, and basic democratic values.
Journalists working in conflict zones like Iran face extreme dangers and risk their lives every day to do their jobs. Their role is vital in documenting the reality on the ground, exposing human rights violations, and keeping the global community informed. Any attack or harm directed at them or their organizations is completely unacceptable.
The executive body urges all parties involved in conflicts to respect international law and treaties that guarantee journalists' safety. Media houses must be recognized as civilian spaces and must never be treated as military targets under any circumstances.
We call on international organizations, human rights bodies, and governments to take immediate action to ensure the safety of journalists and media facilities in conflict areas. We demand that those responsible for attacking media workers be held accountable and face strict legal action.
The IUJ stands in strong solidarity with all affected media professionals and institutions. We reaffirm our commitment to press freedom and demand a safe environment where journalists can carry out their duties without fear, threats, or intimidation.
