BELGRADE -- Yugoslavia made a formal application Saturday to join the European Union, Prime Minister Zoran Zizic said during a Belgrade meeting with EU commission President Romano Prodi. Other priorities of the new Belgrade government, Zizic added, were to proceed with the democratization process, and to "harmonize" relations between Serbia and Montenegro, Yugoslavia's two constituent republics.
His statement followed Friday's sudden announcement by Montenegrin President Milo Djukanovic at the Croatian-hosted EU-Balkans Summit that Montenegro planned to leave Yugoslavia.
