ROME -- A leading farmers' group said on Friday that testing of cattle for mad cow disease was running into delays in Italy. "By the end of January just a limited percentage of cattle due for slaughter will have been tested for BSE, or mad cow disease," Confagricoltura, which represents big agricultural producers, said on its Web page http://www.confagricoltura.it. Confagricoltura appealed to Italian authorities to establish a calendar for testing of cattle for BSE (bovine spongiform encephalopathy) under tough new measures from the European Commission and to monitor veterinary laboratories closely.
