TEHRAN -- Majlis Speaker Mahdi Karrubi on Sunday called on Iranian intellectuals not to overstep the red lines by disrespecting religious sanctities and the values of the Islamic Revolution in making critical comments on the performance of state institutions.

Speaking before Sunday's open session of the Majlis, Karrubi lashed out at certain political camps that are gradually trying to question the foundations of religion in their comments on state of affairs of the country.

He said there have always been freedom of expression, diversity of ideas and differences of opinion in the Islamic Republic, and cautioned that any attempts to tarnish the values of the revolution, Islamic tenets, and the Constitution would harm the system.

Karrubi said that criticizing the performance of a state institution like the Guardian Council would never be an insult to sanctities, but added that the red lines, however, have to be observed.

The Majlis speaker also called on domestic political camps to make coordinated efforts to reinforce national solidarity in the face of foreign threats and to adhere to the aspirations and ideals of the Islamic Revolution.
