TIRANA (Xinhua) -- The United States on Friday called on Macedonia to form a new government ""as quickly as possible"" and keep the country on the track of Euro-Atlantic integration.
""The U.S. hopes to see a new Macedonian government soon, one that will carry on with the Euro-Atlantic agenda,"" Rosemary DiCarlo, the U.S. Deputy Assistant Secretary of State, said after she met in Skopje with Macedonia's Prime Minister-elect Nikola Gruevski.Gruevski's VMRO-DPMNE coalition won a landslide victory in the country's June 1 early elections, and he has been formally asked by President Branko Crvenkovski to form a new government, the job Gruevski has to finish within 20 days.
At a press conference with DiCarlo, Macedonia's Foreign Minister Antonio Milososki said he expected the new government to be formed by mid-July with the inclusion of at least one ethnic Albanian political party.
Gruevski still has to find an ethnic Albanian political party for co-governing, as tradition rules. Ethnic Albanians make up about a quarter of Macedonia's 2.1 million people.
DiCalo also urged Macedonia to wrap up name talks with Greece as quickly as possible in order to remove an obstacle on Macedonia's road to the EU and NATO.
Macedonia has been at loggerheads with Greece over a name issue for the past 17 years.
Greece objects to the country's name of ""Macedonia"", saying it implies territorial claims to the northern Greek province with the same name.
At the NATO summit last April in Bucharest, Romania, Greece vetoed Macedonia's NATO bid over the long-running name dispute between the two neighbors.
""We would like to see the name issue resolved as quickly as possible, so no time is wasted and Macedonia moves ahead,"" DiCarlo said.
