German festival honors Samira Makhmalbaf

TEHRAN -- The Tübingen International Women’s Film Festival honored the young Iranian director Samira Makhmalbaf.

The 8th edition of the festival was held from October 30 to November 5 at the German city of Tübingen.
Her films “Apple”, “The Blackboard” and the segment entitled “God, Construction and Destruction” of “11/09/01 - September 11” were on screen during the Retrospective Section of the festival that was dedicated to her films.
Films shot from behind stage of her films including “How Samira Made ‘The Blackboard’” by her brother Meysam Makhmalbaf, “The Joy of Madness” on “At Five in the Afternoon” and “Samira and Non-professional actors” on the production of “Two-Legged Horse” by her younger sister Hana were also on screen during the retrospective.
A press conference was held after each film in which Samira Makhmalbaf answered questions on the production of her films. She also held workshops on filmmaking on November 6 for directors who attended the festival.
Born in 1980 in Tehran, Samira is the daughter of the celebrated filmmaker Mohsen Makhmalbaf. She directed her first feature film “The Apple” at the age of 17. The film has won many international awards.
In 2004, Samira was selected as one of the top 40 directors worldwide by the Guardian newspaper.
