Rea wins first race in Assen

Jonathan Rea held off the challenged of Max Biaggi to win the first race of the third round of the World Superbikes Championship in Assen.

The Castrol Honda rider did the double at the famous circuit 12 months ago and was back at it again, topping the podium after a real race of attrition.
Rea kept reigning champion Biaggi, who crashed in the warm-up hours before the race, at bay with the Italian settling for second ahead of Spaniard Carlos Checa.
Third was enough for Checa to preserve his lead at the top of the World Superbike standings with his nearest rival Marco Melandri finishing one place down in fourth.
Rea now sits fourth overall just behind Biaggi with his success going against the norm for the rest of the British contingent in the World Superbike paddock.
Leon Camier, fastest in the warm up, missed the start before going onto retire while Leon Haslam crashed early on but battled valiantly to finish 12th.
And Tom Sykes went from riding in third place in the opening laps to finishing well down in 14th and as the final rider home.
