Nuclear pact possible only if new issues not raised: Larijani

TEHRAN – Majlis Speaker Ali Larijani on Saturday hosted a delegation of European Union MPs in Tehran and discussed with them ways to promote Iran-EU parliamentary relations.

The delegation is led by Elmar Brok, chairman of the European Parliament’s Committee on Foreign Affairs.

During the meeting, Larijani referred to the economic and financial ties between Iran and the European Union, saying the ties serve the interests of both sides.

He also called for Iran and the EU’s collective efforts to campaign against drug trafficking, saying the Islamic Republic has been running an extensive battle against narcotics produced in neighbor Afghanistan and destined to Europe.

In another part of his speech, the senior MP threw the weight of the Majlis behind the ongoing nuclear talks between Iran and the group 5+1, saying a final nuclear deal is possible if the other side refrains from “excessive demands” or raise “new issues” in drafting the final text of the deal.

Brok, in turn, expressed hope that Iran and the 5+1 would succeed to clinch the nuclear deal by the self-imposed June 30 deadline.

He also called terrorist groups as the common enemies of all regional and international countries, saying all should put aside their differences and prevent the expansion of terror activities throughout the world.
