Iran’s Ali Miri snatched a silver medal in the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) Junior World Championships Tuesday night.
Miri lifted 150kg in the snatch and 182kg in the clean and jerk and won the silver medal for a total of 332kg in 77kg weight class.“Poland is my first international experience. I worked hard for six months to snatch a medal in the world championships,” Miri said.
“We had a difficult job in the 77kg weight class and the participants were going to register their best records in the class.
“If I had lifted the 190kg in my third attempt, I would have won the gold medal but I couldn’t hoist that,” he added.
Armenian Andranik Karapetyan claimed the gold medal in the class.
After lifting 155kg in the snatch, he followed up with 180kg in the clean and jerk for a winning total of 335kg.
Bronze medal went to Doru Ilie Stoian from Romania who lifted 148kg in the snatch and 178kg in the clean and jerk for a total of 326kg.
Forty-two countries are entered in this year’s competition, with 101 women and 135 men participating in seven women’s and eight men’s body weight categories over the six days of competition in Wroclaw, Poland.
Iran has participated in the event with four lifters.
