TEHRAN -- Academy of Persian Language and Literature Director Gholam-Ali Haddad-Adel has warned of widespread use of names with foreign origins for goods advertized on Iranian TV and radio.

In a letter to the director of Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting (IRIB), Mohammad Sarfaraz, Haddad-Adel pointed to dozens of foreign names used for Iranian goods in radio and TV commercials and said, “These are just some examples of dozens of foreign names for Iranian goods, companies and organizations, which are heard by Persian speakers.”

He added that these commercials “ensnare the minds of people from every walk of life into thinking that goods with non-Persian names are the only ones definitely worth buying.”

“This is a warning to the organizations concerned regarding the issue of observing the protection of the Persian language with special attention,” he stated.

Haddad-Adel, who is also the director of the Sadi Foundation, which promotes Persian language and literature outside Iran, said that the Academy of Persian Language and Literature is ready to collaborate with IRIB in any project “safeguarding the boundaries of the Persian language.”
