Iran to Establish Biggest Port on Caspian Coast

SARI, Mazandaran Province The first phase of the biggest Iranian port on the Caspian coast, named as Amirabad (Khazar) Port, will be completed by March 20, 2001.
The deputy roads and transportation minister for construction and development of Iranian ports and airports said here at a press conference that the construction project of the port will be carried out in three phases over an area of 600 hectares.
Abdollah Mohammad-Hashem said the first phase of the project was launched four years ago, adding that as soon as the first phase is completed, vessels with the capacity of 5,000 tons can berth along an 838-meter long dock.
Amirabad Port is located southeast of the Caspian Sea, near the city of Neka in Amirabad region.
Mohammad-Hashem further told the reporters that in the first phase of the project, the simultaneous berthing of 11 vessels have been made possible. He added that after the completion of the first phase, some four million tons of cargo can be loaded or unloaded annually.
He said that after the completion of the second and third phases of the project, the loading-unloading capacity of the port will rise to eight million tons per year.
The main objective of establishing the port is to transit goods to the littoral states of the Persian Gulf and Southeast Asian countries, he said, adding that the countries in the Central Asia and Caucasus have also welcomed the project.
Commercial exchanges will also be facilitated between Iran's Amirabad Port and Octava Port of Kazakhstan, Astarakhan Port of Russia and Turkmenbashi Port of Turkmenistan, he added.
The newly constructed railway near the port will help to transit goods from Amirabad Port to the Persian Gulf port of Bandar Abbas over a 1,780-km route. The railway presently used for this purpose extends from Sarakhs to Bandar Abbas over a 2,435-km route.
He said a total amount of Rls.41 billion has been spent on the first phase of the project, adding that another Rls.47 billion rials is needed to complete the whole project.
The deputy minister further said that the construction of Amirabad Port has been warmly received by Russia, which is also setting up a new port on Volga River named as Pioneer Port. He noted that Iran will contribute to the construction of Pioneer Port, which will be announced as sister Port of Amirabad.
In conclusion, Mohammad-Hashem said that a new port with a 483-meter dock will soon be established on the Fereydoun-Kenar coast over an area of 1,230 sq.m.
