Spanish PM calls US attack on Iran ‘unjustifiable’ and ‘dangerous’
TEHRAN - Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez has condemned the U.S. military attack on Iran, describing it as an “unjustifiable” and “dangerous” military intervention.
Sanchez is an EU leader who have openly condemned the joint U.S.-Israeli war on Iran, which have triggered a spiraling conflict in the region.
Sanchez's government has cemented its reputation as the most critical voice of U.S. President Donald Trump's interventionist foreign policy in Europe, and one of the firmest critics of Israel's war in Gaza.
Spanish Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Albares has also denounced the “unilateral' U.S.-Israeli war on Iran, saying it contravenes international law.
Speaking to Euronews' flagship morning program Europe Today on Monday morning, Albares said the United States and Israel's "unilateral action" in Iran "doesn't have backing from the United Nations' Charter or international law."
Albares called on the European Union to be a "voice of reason" amid a dangerous escalation.
"Through violence, there will be no peace, but there will be no democracy or stability either," Albares said. "Therefore, we really will foster de-escalation and going back to the negotiation table."
Iran and the U.S. had been engaging in talks on the Iranian nuclear program in Geneva before military attack on Feb. 28.
Spanish Defense Minister Margarita Robles has also said “no assistance of any kind, absolutely none,” had been provided from the Rota and Moron bases in southern Spain, which are shared with the U.S. but remain under Spanish command.
“There is a deal with the U.S. over these bases, but our understanding of the deal is that operations have to comply with international legal frameworks and that there has to be international support for them,” Robles said.
The U.S. and Israel were acting “unilaterally without the support of an international resolution,” Robles said.
In the first day of their deceptive and illegal war on Feb. 28, Ayatollah Khamenei, Leader of the Islamic Revolution, and a number of top military officials, including Armed Forces Chief of Staff Abdolrahim Mousavi, Defense Minister Amir Nasirzadeh and IRGC Commander Mohammad Pakpour were assassinated.
In the first day of the war, 168 elementary schoolgirls were also massacred in the Israeli-U.S. airstrikes in Minab, a city in the southern coastal province of Hormozgan province.
Many counties have strongly condemned the war on Iran and sent condolences to Iranian officials and people over these heinous crimes.
Russian President Vladimir Putin said the assassination of Ayatollah Khamenei and members of his family was a "cynical" murder that violated all the norms of human morality and international law.
In a note to Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, released by the Kremlin, Putin said, "Please accept my deep condolences in connection with the murder of the Supreme Leader of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Seyed Ali Khamenei, and members of his family, committed in cynical violation of all norms of human morality and international law."
Belarus’ president also extended condolences over the assassination of Ayatollah Khamenei
“The spiritual leader remained loyal to his people until his last breath and courageously accepted martyrdom, defending Iran’s sovereignty and independence,” President Alexander Lukashenko said Monday, AP reported.
In an online statement, Lukashenko called the killing of the Leader “a treacherous attack,” offering condolences to the country’s president and solidarity with its people.
“Escalation is result of US-Israeli armed aggression”
Putin also had a phone call on Monday with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, the Kremlin said.
The two discussed “the escalation in the Middle East as a result of American-Israeli armed aggression” against Iran, and both “expressed serious concern over the real risks of the spreading of the conflict, which has already affected several Arab countries and is fraught with catastrophic consequences,” the Kremlin said in the readout of the call, AP reported.
Putin “emphasized the urgent need to resolve the current extremely dangerous situation through political and diplomatic means,” and Prince Mohammed “expressed the opinion that Russia could play a positive, stabilizing role in these times, given its friendly relations with both Iran and the Persian Gulf countries,” the readout said.
