TABAS, Khorasan Province Two tremors, measuring 3.5 and 3.2 degrees on the Richter scale, jolted the city of Tabas in the southern end of this northeastern province on Sunday night.
According to the Khorasan Seismological Center, affiliated to the Geophysics Institute of Tehran University, the tremors occurred, respectively, at 21:51 and 23:31 hours local time (1821 and 2001 GMT).
The center said that the epicenters of the quakes were some 400km southwest of the provincial capital of Mashhad, on the outskirts of Tabas.
Residents were frightened and, despite the onset of winter cold, most of them poured into streets late on Sunday and remained outside their homes.
No report has yet been reached on any possible casualty or damage to property caused by either of the quakes.
Tabas was the scene of a killer earthquake in 1978 which killed tens of thousands of residents of the city situated in the heart of Iran's salt deserts.
