"Jay Jay" Okocha to Quit Nigeria After 2002 World Cup

LAGOS Nigeria's PSG star Austin "Jay Jay" Okocha said Wednesday he will quit international football after the 2002 World Cup because of lack of motivation.

"If you stay too long at a place, people are bound to get tired of you. You could also get tired of the place. Things are no longer the same with the Super Eagles and I will quit the team after the World Cup in 2002," Okocha said.

"Lately it has become more and more difficult to motivate myself playing for the national team," AFP reported.

The gifted midfield star was first capped at full international level in 1993 after an impressive outing with the country's youth side at the African youth championship in Mauritius the same year.

The former Fernabache of Turkey star played for the team when it won the 1994 Nations Cup in Tunisia, won Olympic gold in Atlanta in 1996 and played in the World Cup finals in 1994 and 1998.

Okocha meanwhile dismissed fears that he will miss this weekend's Nations Cup qualifier against Zambia in Lagos because of a leg injury.

"I'm fit and ready to go against Zambia on Saturday," he said, following reports that he would not appear.
